Arise Television is undoubtedly one of Nigeria's top three national television stations. The station became my favorite in 2020 during the EndSARS protest. However, I'm starting to lose interest due to the uncultured and unprofessional attitude of Mr. Oseni Rufai.
Not all broadcasters understand the dos and don'ts of the profession. In today's Nigeria, many radio and television presenters lack knowledge of what constitutes suitable content for broadcast. Oseni falls into the category of broadcasters who require additional training.
Some presenters lack proper education, leading them to incorrectly refer to themselves as journalists or pressmen. Not all On Air Personalities (OAPs) practice journalism. I view Oseni as an OAP rather than a journalist. No certified or thoroughbred journalist will bully his guest during an interview.
His on-air behaviour cum comments have been unprofessional and unacceptable. As a respected television station, Arise Television should ensure that its presenters adhere to the highest standards of professionalism.
I strongly believe that sending Oseni back to school for further training would be a wise decision. This would enable him to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to become a better broadcaster.
It is unprofessional and unacceptable for Oseni to insult or bully guests, particularly politicians during live interviews. As a broadcaster, he should maintain a neutral and respectful demeanour, allowing guests to express their views without intimidation or harassment.
Oseni, is brilliant and bold but he should refrain from using the platform to launch personal attack or get revenge against someone. The way he attacks guests on live interviews shows he did not study Mass Communication or any media related course in the university. Arise Television should know that there is no way a man who went to
the University of Agriculture to study Animal Anatomy without proper training in media will conduct an interview like those who studied Mass Communication or Journalism.
Oseni has had many issues with different guests, but the latest was his gaffe during a live interview with Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Adviser to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike, on Public Communication and New Media. It is unprofessional and disrespectful to address your guests as 'you guys'.
It's time for Arise Television to take action and invest in Oseni's professional development. He can also learn from Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.
